Well here it is, Christmas time! A very wonderful thing that is indeed! I love Christmas plain and simple, I just love it! But, it is the Real Christmas that I love. I am so disappointed that Christmas time has become a story about the ACLU’s efforts to remove God from every sector of our culture. That my friend is not Christmas, not even a little bit. I have a couple of very simple things to share with all of you this year about Christmas. Once I learned these, everything changed. Are you ready? First, you cannot buy Christmas. No amount of money will ever buy Christmas. Christmas is not for sale and will not ever come from a store. Christmas is about one thing and one thing only. God showed us, and taught us, and demonstrated this one thing to us, and many folks still don’t get it. I didn’t get it for a very long time. Once this truth becomes cemented in your heart, you will find that you just cannot ever go back to your old ways. I mean it, it is that powerful of a revelation. It will ruin some of the worlds “x-mas” mentality for you from now on.

The truth about Real Christmas is that the only Real Christmas gift anyone can ever give, is simply the giving of ourselves! Isn’t that what God did that very first Christmas morning? Why yes it is! And all of the rest of it, the Santa’s, the trees, the trimmings, the shopping, the gifts, the family, food, fun and general festivities, are nice good, pleasant and wonderful in their own ways. I have learned however, that the Real Christmas spirit, just like the Real Christmas gift is simply the giving of ourselves to others. It has nothing to do with the type, version, cost, brand, or model of the gifts I might give. It has nothing to do with the gifts I might get. It has nothing atall to do with stores, money, shopping, or whatever else it is that you may have filled your “Holiday Traditions” with.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not opposed to all the other good stuff about Christmas, I enjoy plenty of them. I do not ever forget though, that if a selfless giving of ourselves, not just our money, or some presents, but all of who we are is not included, we miss the main thing!

God gave us Himself in a very up close and personal way that very first Christmas. He gave Himself to us for our benefit. To seek our greatest good. He came to love us, to serve us, to offer Himself as a ransom for many. He didn’t buy anything at the store, the only thing He wrapped was the towel around his waist as he washed the feet of thetwelve, and the onlytree He decorated was the cross at Calvary, as He purchased our pardon, some 33 years later. And we are still enjoying the present, of the presence of Christ. Not just a Christmas, but every day that we choose to remain in Him.

Have you ever thought about how we lead ourselves and our kids astray every year at Christmas? It looks to me like we tell them and one another that it is perfectly fine to covet at Christmas. Isn’t that one of God’s big ten no-no’s? “what do you want for Christmas, little boy? Tell Santa! Make a list of all the ‘things and the stuff’ you desire and you will get a whole bunch of it just because you want it.” Batteries not included of course! Buy! We have to buy! Stuff! More stuff! Is that enough presents? How could we be the only house without a personal laptop computer for every family member, an x-box 18,362 and a 275” plasma screen, four cars, three boats, two vacation homes and a real diamond encrusted partridge in a pear tree? Listen closely now, I am NOT saying wealth or affluence is always bad, evil , or wrong or even not good. Why if I suffered from affluneza, I would have nice things and good scenery too! What I am saying is this, Real Christmas is presence , not presents. And that is it. God showed us this simple truth, but we wandered away, oh so far away from it, and I believe, I really believe we need to start to find our way back.

There is one more point I would like to make about all of this, and that is just how generous God is! God is so generous that the gift of Himself over 2000 years ago, is still giving and giving and giving! God has never stopped giving! If you will stop and think, and really ponder just how generous our God is, it will boggle your mind. I believe that every one of us, who really has the Spirit of God within our hearts, cannot help but be generous with our lives and resources. That is because we have the Spirit of our generous God dwelling in us! Yes that means our money too, but that is not the main thing. The main thing is generously giving of our selves for the benefit of others, like Christ does. We serve a God who gives in so many extravagant ways. Look at His creation, the beauty, the wonder, the abundance, all around us. For me, if I desire to be “like Christ” I need to be extravagant in how I give anything that I have to give. God has given me and you , and manner of extravagant gifts. This Christmas, would you really think about moving from a mindset of just money, stores and stuff, and perhaps would you pray and ponder, about having a mindset of extravagant giving of all you are? Presence is what those who really love you desire, yes some presents would be nice too, but Real Christmas always has been, and always will be, about the gift of presence.

Merry Christmas!

Pastor Kent

We hope you had a blessed September! Here’s our prayer and praise notes for the month.

Thank the Lord for bringing ten students to Berdyansk Training Institute (BTI). Please pray for the continued interest of the non-Christian students, and that the Lord will work in their hearts and draw them to Himself.

Praise for slow, but continued progress on the construction of the Berdyansk Ministry Center, which Bill oversees. We are anticipating final inspection in February (give or take) 2010 and all work must be done before then. Please pray that the Lord will bring in the funds needed to continue the work and be done before inspection.

Thank the Lord for continued good health. Please pray for all of us as winter comes on.

Thank you so much for standing with us in prayer! God bless.

Love,
Betsy & Bill

There are a lot of references to stones in the Bible.

There are a lot of references to stones in the Bible. There are Stone Tablets, Standing Stones, Stone Altars, Stones for throwing at the wicked, Stone Temples, Stone Statues, Stone Idols, Stone Pillows and on and on the list goes. (Kinda sounds like Bubba and all the ways you can fix shrimp!) It does make sense, 1st century Palestine was a very rocky place. The area where so many of our Bible stories took place was and still is a very “stoney” place.

Stones sure come in handy even today, as a matter of fact right now as I look out the window my grill is sitting on some stones to keep it off the damp ground, in hopes the legs won’t rust out prematurely. We innovative thinking humans learned a long time ago how to make our own stones. We started with mud bricks and have moved from there to a multitude of stone like substances, such as cement, cinderblocks, reinforced concrete and many others. There are resins and epoxies and whatever else some of that stuff is. All the ads say they, “have the look and feel of natural stone” You can even buy “stone look” paint, so even if it is not a man-made stone or a real stone, it can look like one! I have always wanted to paint a guitar with some of that so I could have a stone or “rock” guitar. Get it? Rock guitar? Ha ha! I would then be able to say; “Why yes my good man I do in fact play rock guitar… see ?”. (I would like a chrome one too but you can’t find any real looking chrome paint.)

Anyway I digress, so back to the stone thing. Jesus must have known about working with stone, after all he and his earthly father were handy men. Yes I know it says carpenter but, most scholars agree that stone was what most folks worked with back then if they planned on being able to work for any length of time, and even if Jesus worked exclusively with wood he would have had to integrate and fit it to the surrounding stone work, so we can make a pretty safe guess that Jesus knows stones. Well, he was there at the creation of the world and quite a lot of this world and the entire universe for that matter is made of stone so yes, Jesus knows stone! The finger of God has touched a lot of stone over the eons of time, from the precious stones that heaven is built of, to the stoney hearts found in the chests of thousands of years of humanity. The mountains of the moon were formed by God, as were every grain of sand and every pebble on every beach on the first day they sprang into being. The finger-prints of God are also found on every asteroid, every planet, every moon, every comet, that ever has been, ever will be, or ever was. God’s finger wrote the Ten Commandments on stone tablets in the Old Testament. God’s finger wrote some unknown and unrecorded thoughts in the New Testament as well. Did you know that? God’s finger wrote in the New Testament, and we don’t exactly know what he said! Here read this:

John 8: 1-11

1But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them. 3The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group 4and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” 6They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him. But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. 7When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.” Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground. 9At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. 10Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” 11″No one, sir,” she said. “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”

I have been around long enough to know that we church people throw a lot of stones around at times in our lives. We get cranky and miffed, our feathers get ruffled up and we start pitching. I have not met anyone anywhere in all my travels among church people for all these years that has been willing to claim they had an absolutely sinless life. But… I sure have met an awful lot of people willing to throw stones! We who are called to refrain from the judgment of others, grab some stones, point at another’s behavior, and wail away, totally oblivious to the simple truth that in order to do that, we ourselves have to sin to do it! First by being judgmental, next by saying we are without sin, (which makes us liars according to 1st John by the way) so now we are sinning even if we were not before, and…. Well it just doesn’t work. I have seen that we pastors get a inordinate amount of stones chucked our way, we are after all a very easy target, I mean look at all we do wrong! I have also seen that just about every church has an Earnest T. Bass or two within it, folks who just like to throw rocks, and see what kind of damage they do. For Them it is not even personal, just the sound of the glass breaking and the scuffle of the people trying to get out of the way is enough for them. I have found that there are churches that have mean people in them. These are the ones who throw their stones to injure the others they want to hurt or get out of the way or just don’t like. The devil doesn’t seem to have much trouble finding people to help him ruin lives, even in many churches. I know it sounds all wrong, but the devil likes to go to church! Just to see who he can hurt, damage or oppress in some way.

Little Davey the shepherd boy threw a stone or two in his day. He chucked some at lions, some at bears and wolves, and some at other wild beasts. It seems to me that he was real good at it. One stone took down Goliath. Got him right between the eyes. Little Davey soon became King David, and was referred to as “The man after God’s own heart”. Here is what I would like to get us focused on. We all know right from wrong. We all know what it is that we can and even should throw stones at. It is certainly not one another. If you are without sin the truth is you will be like Christ, who didn’t condemn a guilty woman. He only instructed her to, “Go now and leave your life of sin.” He didn’t yell at, confront, and/or demean the accused or the accusers. He simply wrote in the sand. He offered grace and instruction. I have often wondered about what those words written on the ground that day said. Was it the whole law about adultery, about how both of the accused should have been there, not just the woman? Was it a rewrite of the Ten Commandments? Did Jesus start writing a list of the personal sins that each one standing there had in his heart? We don’t know, but it touched the hearts of the men there that day, starting with the older, and moving through to the younger, until none were willing throw a stone let alone an accusation.

How about us? Are we willing to put down our stones? Are we willing to lay aside our accusations? Could we be willing instead, to offer grace and instruction? Please read this:

Luke 6:37

37″Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven

We all have room to grow, we all can love more deeply and obey more completely. This month’s challenge is simply this, let’s put down the stones, and offer love instead. God will be honored by that, and we will all be blessed. The hard truth is that when we lash out or chuck stones in any way; any way at all, it says way more about us, than it does about the one we seek to condemn, injure, or harm. Each one of us here at Bread of Life has been given a very precious opportunity, what we do with that opportunity will tell all the world and everyone around us a lot about who we really are. Are you willing to be who and what God has called you to be? Or is your own stony heart in your hand, ready to chuck?

Peace
Pastor Kent

During the time that Jesus walked among us as a man, as he passed by the sea, through the market-places, the highways, cities and towns, he often said “Come and follow me”. What Jesus was doing, was inviting people into a relationship with him. He is still inviting people into a relationship today. If you think about it, Jesus had his rag-tag bunch of 12, and they found themselves not just in a relationship with Jesus, but also with each other. As we read the stories of the conflicts about who was the greatest, which ones would get the positions of privilege, sitting on Jesus’ left and right, we even see the disciple’s Moms getting into the relational mix. We also see the boys telling others that they were not doing it right because to them, the relationship was so important that they missed the bigger picture. (See Mark 9:38-39) Many of us have noticed that Jesus himself invested in a special smaller “inner circle” of a few people, who just seemed to be a little closer to Him. So we can see in the New Testament, accounts of these inter-twined relationships, inner, outer and all around.

Are things really that different today? Do we not find ourselves in relationships with the people in our lives, and the people that they are in relationship with just sort of come along into the picture as well? We find all of these overlapping circles of friends and families all intertwined and mixed together, some happily some not so happily! We have friends, and family members, we also (within these intertwined relation-ships) have those who are very close to us, our own “inner circles”. We have other friends and associates, co-workers, neighbors, our church family, and on and on the overlapping circles go, with us each one of us, being the central part of the connection all those other folks have to each other. This is true even in the relationships we have with the people we are not really that close to.
We here at Bread of Life have a very special quality, and with that comes a unique opportunity. Quite a lot of us have very good relationship skills. Many, many outer and inner circles overlap here at Bread of Life and that my friends is a beautiful thing! You have probably heard me use the words “Relational Ministry”. Relational Ministry is simply being together for a greater good than ourselves. This applies whenever we are together as a group, to serve a group that is not a part of the inner group, but is instead a part of the outer group. (You might want to read that last sentence again) We see it in the Praise Team. We see it in the Kitchen Crew. We see it in the Blankets of Blessing/Sara Team. Wednesday Night Kidz Club. The Sparr Food Program. On and on the list goes. Speaking of the Sparr situation, a beautiful thing about that, is the fact that Pastor Mark and his church overlap with Bread of Life and we have relationships building and working and growing as a result. Overlapping inner groups (the two churches) serving another outer group (The Sparr kids) That is a very small glimpse of just how wonderful and far reaching our relationships can go. Another glimpse would be Daniel in Greece, and the other missionaries we find ourselves connected to. The fact that we are a part of a denomination is another. The Kingdom of God is so much more than the tiny portion we each might see.

The challenge, yours and mine, for all of us here at Bread of Life, is to diversify our relationships. What I mean by that is to make them more and more inclusive. We need to look for opportunities to include more people in the things we do. This is especially true for all of the people in all of the circles we interact with, who are not a part of our church, or even the Kingdom of God. We need to think about the way we think! We need to change the way we change! Here is an example, our home groups are a wonderful ministry, a relational ministry! Each of our home groups is an inner circle, of people who are a part of multiple other over-lapping circles. All of the inter-twined relationships are opportunities for us to witness, to encourage, and have an impact on others for the Kingdom of God. I would like to see us move deeper, and define our home groups by another name, let’s call them LIFE Groups. L is for love I is for instruction F is for fellowship E is for encouragement. We meet together for Love, Instruction, Fellowship and Encouragement, why not define it as such? Think about it, Love is relational, Instruction is relational, Fellowship is relational Encouragement is relational! Since we have so many people who do so well with relation-ships, why not use that to define a very important part of who we are here at Bread of Life? Why not use that to touch others for Kingdom growth and church growth and relationship growth? Let’s diversify our LIFE groups and look to include others groups like the un-churched and folks who attend a church other than Bread of Life, wow what a thought huh? Overlapping our relationship on purpose! As I often say, I make a good Methodist because there is a method to my madness. One of Jesus’ most important instructions to us is found in the great commission. Matthew 28:18-20 (NIV) 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Can we see the deeper impact of this command and commission of our Lord? Do we recognize how personal this statement is for each of us? Jesus said I am in charge of everything now, (all authority). Since I am the big boss now, here is your job, (therefore) make disciples, baptize, and teach obedience. Do you see what all of these have in common? All of these things are relational! Each one of us has been commanded and instructed by Jesus Himself to be involved in relational ministry.

Our relationship with Jesus is a healthy one only if He is in charge! Jesus commands and commissions us to be in relation-ship with others. You and I will never disciple any-one we are not in relation-ship with! We will never be able to teach without relationship! The old saying that says “the best teaching is caught not taught” is oh so very true, especially for us Christians.

I am asking you to obey Jesus’ commandment and to follow His commissioning. Is Jesus your Lord? Then do what He says! Here is how it works; Pick a person or persons to invest in. Do what you need to do so that you can be together with them. Meet them for lunch, play golf, go fishing, take all the kids out somewhere, I think you get the idea. I venture a pretty safe guess that many of you thought this was going to be a lot harder than this didn’t you? All you start with is one simple goal, Build your relationship. They may even decide that they like you and your circles of friends and “associates” enough to become a part of Bread of Life church or maybe even the Kingdom of God! But remember, you will need to earn the privilege of asking something of them. This will only hap-pen as a result of your investment in the relationship. What you are going to be asking them to do is relate to Jesus and His people, through the ministries of Bread of Life.

It is no secret that we don’t always do a very good job of following the instructions God has given us. We do find many times when obedience does not come easily. I would like to remind you of a beautifully simple truth. “My yoke is easy and my burden is light” says our Lord Jesus. Have you ever considered that simply having friends and being a friend to others is a very large part of your primary mission and purpose in life? That you are already in relational ministry that simply needs some focus and some in-tent applied? Can we here at Bread of Life simply love our neighbors? I see that happening just about every time I am among you! Let’s take what we have that we are so very good at, and surrender it to God. In actuality what we will be doing is obeying His instructions. The, “I am in charge, and the therefore” part.

This all begins by simply seeking to have “EACH ONE REACH ONE”! All the “EACH ONE REACH ONE” slogan says, is that we agree with God, and His definition of the great com-mission, that it is personal and do-able by every single one of us. Jesus has not asked you to do any-thing He has not empowered and enabled you to do. Are you in overlapping circles of relationships? There is your mission field! Do you know people who are not currently plugged in to a church family? Of course you do, don’t we all?

Start praying right now, choose the people you will invest in, plan, prepare and begin to make the adjustments to your schedule, that will allow you to…dare I say it…Obey God! I am simply asking you to help bring some focus and purpose to our ministries here at Bread of Life, through what we have and what we already do, relational ministry. I am also simply asking you to take God at His word, obey His Word, and EACH ONE REACH ONE! Who knows we the people of Bread of Life might just reach 10 or 20, maybe 120 new people for the Kingdom of God.

We might just reach 5000, people or an entire city, county, nation and continent. Why would God not bless our obedience as we seek to follow His instructions and “EACH ONE REACH ONE”?

18Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19There-fore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Did you notice Jesus says that He will remain in relationship with us to the very end? When it comes to actually doing the will of God and obeying the great commission, if we the people of Bread of Life are not going to choose to be willing to obey and do it, who will? If we are not going to choose to do it starting right now…then when will we?
My prayers are with and for all of you, peace to you and yours,

He teaches us a lot about how we can live “God’s Way”. He is very easy to talk to. He never judges us or talks to us like he is all “Holy” and we are not. He says things like “Remember Thumper from Bambi? His Daddy was right! If you can’t say sumpin’ nice, don’t say nuthin’ at all”! We think maybe our pastor knows something about the love of God. He sure seems to love all of us. Come see us sometime, we will welcome you and love you. We will try to encourage you, and we hope you will see, that here at Bread of Life, you really can come as you are and be loved, accepted and encounter the Power of God!

Just like every other thing God has created, the plants and animals, we people and whatever else you can think of, they all grow by adding or increasing. That is God’s design and His plan. Let’s accept it as His design, His plan, and His will for each of us, and our Church. We as people and as a Church Family cannot grow without increase! Is there a family that grows without increase, a tree, a child? As we grow we change, because we are supposed to. People and families and Churches change as they grow, God made it that way on purpose.

“Living things grow and growing things change”

All of us could use some growth in our personal lives. We as a Church could use some growth too! In both instances, that is as individuals and as a Church, we have plenty of room to grow in our worship, our spiritual maturity, our Bible reading and our prayer lives to name a few. We could also use some growth in our outreach as well as our existing programs. These things require change to be successful, just like most of the living things God has created. A tadpole transforms a lot as it becomes a frog. The butterfly starts out like a funny looking worm, and yet by change, and total transformation, it becomes what it was really designed to be. It fulfills its purpose. I am reminded of a cartoon I once saw where two caterpillars are looking up as a butterfly goes by and one says to the other “you will NEVER get me up in one of those things” That is true, the caterpillar cannot and should not fly, but the butterfly MUST. We all need transformation to fulfill our purpose too, so that we are successful. God wants to see us be the best we can be, that will require growth, and that growth will change us. God is a God of increase and abundance, a God of life and of the living.

“Living things grow and growing things change”

I fully understand that change is a very challeng-ing issue for most of us. We really don‟t embrace it as well as we could, or perhaps even as we should. I do believe God is seeking to transform us, and that my friends, is change on a grand scale! Transformation is a process, and we as people and a church really need to try to under-stand that. The hard truth (for most of us) is that it will always be an ongoing process. God loves us far too much to let us stay the way we are. So, He is going to be doing and ongo-ing work in our hearts and our lives (anyone remem-ber the old song “He‟s Still Working‟ on Me”?) Again we come back to where we started.

“Living things grow and growing things change”

I am sure God can provide the kind of growth we need to stay relevant and engaged, in ministry and mission with each other and to our community and the world. I will not relent in my absolute belief that we must change the world around us. I am simply asking that all of us would begin with a simple prayer for increase, as we simply increase our prayers. That is not so bad, it is actually simple isn’t it? (Read that underlined part again please just for emphasis!) We could then add a specific request for an in-crease in our ability to experience God’s embrace, and then for an increase in our ability to impact the world around us. I think we will grow as we go through this process, I think that as we grow we will change, for the better of course! Let’s begin with prayer, let’s continue with prayer and praise, and let’s do what we do, on purpose, like we mean it, with passion and zeal! The growth will come, God is certainly going to do His part. He will love us into a life of goodness and godliness. As this happens we will grow, and you know what???? We will come alive in new and exciting ways, we will begin to experience abundance and we will truly thrive! All by accepting God’s plan, His design, the simple truth that,

“Living things grow and growing things change”

May God’s peace, love, grace and favor be upon you and your whole house!
